Foundations need autonomy—and a robust governance framework. The conference will discuss how internal and external steering mechanisms can be designed in a contemporary way to enable foundations to operate effectively. The focus will be on the possibilities offered by thoughtful drafting of statutes and best practices for founders and foundation board members, as well as current issues in external supervision: What will supervision look like in the future, what do authorities expect from foundations, and how do reporting and communication work? Finally, the interactions between governance and tax exemption will be examined. The governance perspective will then be applied to various types of foundations: corporate-affiliated foundations, with their checks and balances between the foundation and the company, as well as the best possible structuring of family foundations—with or without reform. The conference will conclude with a highly topical issue: How can university-affiliated foundations be managed in such a way that conflicts of interest are avoided while the interests of beneficiaries are optimally safeguarded? The title #governance2030 is intended as a programmatic call to critically review and further develop one’s own governance in the coming years; the event aims to provide a foundation for doing so.
