Good to know

Employees

There are over ten dedicated and experienced students working at the Welcome Desk, who are usually assigned to three-hour shifts. They have been at the University of Zurich for several years and are studying for a bachelor's, master's or doctorate in various subjects. The employees are well acquainted with the UZH premises and are very familiar with university procedures and campus life due to their own studies. The people at the Welcome Desk are also informed about current events and happenings. If they cannot answer a question themselves, they are also always eager to find helpful solutions or know which office can answer the question.

History

The information desk has been in the entrance hall since April 2008 and is a gift from the Zurich University Association ZUNIV (now UZH Alumni) for the 175th anniversary of the University of Zurich. The Alumni Association celebrated its 125th anniversary in the same year and wanted to present the university with a valuable gift on the occasion of the two milestone birthdays. In a competition among architecture students at ETH, the jury decided on the current version with a closed cube to protect the person sitting at the desk from the drafts in the hall. Visually, the Welcome Desk is intended to be reminiscent of the oxidized copper sheeting of the dome on the university tower: the Welcome Desk forms an information roof, helps with orientation and can be seen from afar – just like the tower of the main building.
